Electrical safety is a general practice of handling and maintaining electrically powered equipment to prevent incidents. Adequate training is required to properly identify and control hazards to keep the environment safe for those around.

Let’s learn a few safety tips by Electrogrip!

  1. Careful with Hair Appliances
why are the lights in your home flickering

Curling irons, blow dryers, and straighteners can cause burns and even fires if left turned on unattended. Many people when blow drying, straightening, or curling their hair can get serious burns, so it is beneficial to be cautious when using these appliances.

  1. Keep a Fire Extinguisher handy!
Everything you need to know about electric fires

Always have a fire extinguisher handy in the house. Water is a good conductor of electricity & hence should never be used to put out any electric fire, big or small.

  1. Install Ground Fault Circuit Interrupters

A ground-fault circuit interrupter shuts off if it detects the current is being diverted due to a short circuit or insulation problem. This helps protect people from being shocked, and it prevents fires due to electrical faults. GFCI devices should be installed in bathrooms and kitchens.

  1. Minimize the usage of extension cords

Extension cords are not intended for long-term usage. If you have an appliance that cannot naturally reach an electrical outlet, have a skilled electrician install an outlet nearby rather than use an extension cord long-term.

  1. Switch off Irons

Never leave an iron on unattended, as this presents both a fire and safety hazard. Each year, children are severely burned from irons left turned on and left unattended. Do not leave an iron on a piece of clothing for too long, as this also presents the risk of causing a fire.

  1. Investigate Flickering Lights

Have flickering lights checked and fixed as it can be caused by loose connections somewhere or the bulb itself needs to be secured or replaced.

  1. Be careful with cords.

Small children can easily pull heavy or hot appliances on their own if the cords are kept within reach. Use command hooks or cord ties to keep long cables away from little hands.
