What is a Lightning Protection System?

A lightning protection system is a system that is mounted upon the structure to protect the structure when lightning strikes. 

Lightning protection system primarily consists of a lightning rod, also known as a air terminal which requires a connection to earth to perform its protective role. The rod diverts the current to the ground instead of it striking the structure and damaging it.

The other components of lightning protection system are:-

1.  Conductors– Conductors are connections between the lightning rods and the group connections in order to divert the current to the ground without causing harm to the structure. Conductors should be preferably made of copper or aluminium.
2. Earthing Rods– Earthing Rods provide connection to the ground which transfers the current that strikes the lightning rod to the ground so that it safely disperses. A minimum of two earthing rods is required by a structure.
3. Lightning Arrestors– Lightning arrestors provide protection to the structure against lightning strikes which may enter the building through electrical wiring of the structure which may result in potential power surges, causing damages to the entire building. To prevent this, lightning arrestors are typically installed in the structure’s exterior from where the  electricity service enters the structure.
4. Bonding– Bonding involves connecting metal objects such as water pipes to the ground in order to protect against sideflashes.

Sideflashes are disruptive discharge between a conductor transverse by an oscillatory current of high frequency such as lightning and neighbouring masses of metal or between different parts of the same conductor.

Lightning Protection System is a requirement in today’s day and age for your building to avoid the risk of damage to the building through lightning and other problems that may result from it such as risk of fire.
